Luiz E. Bertassoni DDS, PhD
Associate Professor, Knight Cancer Precision Biofabrication Hub, Cancer Early Detection Advanced Research Center, Division of Oncological Sciences, Knight Cancer Institute
Dept. of Biomedical Engineering, School of Medicine, Dept. of Restorative Dentistry, School of Dentistry
Background:
Dr. Bertassoni obtained his PhD in Biomaterials from the University of Sydney with a focus on calcified tissue nanostructure and mechanics. He subsequently worked as a postdoctoral researcher at UCSF and then at Harvard Medical School and MIT’s joint program in Health Sciences and Technology. Luiz is currently director of the Knight Cancer Precision Biofabrication Hub, a collaborative laboratory dedicated to using on tissue engineering strategies to model early cancer and promote tissue regeneration. Luiz leads a multidisciplinary research group focused on three research targets: (1) 3D bioprinting of complex multitypic tissue constructs with functional vascular networks for regenerative applications, (2) the design and synthesis of hydrogels for tissue engineering, as well as growth factor and drug delivery, and (3) investigating the hierarchical organization of collagen in mineralized tissues and the specific mineral-matrix interactions regulating the biomechanics of calcified tissues. Dr. Bertassoni is also a co-founder of 2 biotech spin-off companies (HuMarrow and RegendoDent).
Research Interests:
- Microscale technologies and bio-printing for tissue regeneration
- Nanoscale structural and mechanical properties of mineralized tissues
- Organs-on-a-chip
