Abbas S. Milani PhD, PEng
Professor, Tier 1 Principal’s Research Chair in Sustainable and Smart Manufacturing, Director, UBC Materials and Manufacturing Research Institute (MMRI), Okanagan Node PI, Composites Research Network (CRN),
School of Engineering
Background:
Dr. Milani received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at McGill University with a focus on fabric-reinforced composites, followed by his Postdoctoral Studies at MIT on optimization of engineering materials under uncertainty. His research program involves advanced modeling, simulation, and AI-based multicriteria design optimization of composite/biocomposite materials, structures, and manufacturing processes. Example of his lab’s recent success includes a New Frontiers in Research Fund (Exploration) project to develop a sim-to-real transfer learning AI architecture for reliable predication and optimization of advanced manufacturing processes in the presence of limited data. He also currently serves as the lead of NSERC CREATE in Immersive Technologies (CITech). His interdisciplinary research in collaboration with national and international industrial sectors, thrives to link theoretical concepts to real-world applications, thereby enabling collaborative innovations towards new high-quality and cost-effective products. Dr. Milani was inducted into the Royal Society of Canada – College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists (2020, Canada).
